Habits of Highly Successful People

That some achieve great success, is proof to all that others can achieve it as well. (Abraham Lincoln)

Highly successful people share certain universal characteristics and habits that could make them to be truly very effective in whatever they do. Successful people are successful precisely because they formed the habit of doing things that failures do not like to do. If you do not consciously form good habits, you will unconsciously form bad ones. We are what we repeatedly do, excellence then is not an act, but a habit.

Quality is not an act, it is a habit.
(Aristotle)

The individual who wants to be successful in life must appreciate the might and force of habit. He must be quick to break those habits that can break him — and hasten to adopt those practices that will become the habits that help him achieve the success he desires.
Characteristics or attitudes are nothing more than habits of thought and habits can be acquired.  Character, in the long run, is the decisive factor in the life of an individual and of nations alike. Success is a matter of understanding and religiously practicing specific, simple habits that always lead to success. Do you exhibit any of these personality traits? These traits are success secrets:

  1. Prudence is the number one characteristic of highly successful people. Successful people do not only have the ability to handle practical matters with good and sound judgment, but also with regard to appropriate actions to be taken at any given time and place. They always act with care and thought for the future.
  2. Successful people are disciplined. Their ability to exert self-control allows them to control their emotions, behavior and desires in order to achieve their goals. With self-discipline most anything is possible. The first and best victory is to conquer self. Before you can conquer a mountain, you need to conquer yourself. Mastering others is strength. But mastering yourself is true power to success.
  3. Successful people learn continually. Successful people are always ready to learn, because they know that he who knows best knows how little he knows. The heart of the prudent gets knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge. Their ears are open for knowledge, because they know that an investment in knowledge always pays the best interest. They are not afraid to learn new things. They even learn from the mistakes they made. That is why they are very intelligent and knowledgable. They know something that others don’t. They always desire to learn something useful.
  4. Successful people have conviction. They have the vision and conviction that a dream can be achieved. They have deep-belief of what they want to do with their life and how to achieve it. They are steadfast; firm in mind and purpose. The height of their success is determined by the depth of their belief. They set their goals high, and don’t stop till they get there. They know that conviction never so excellent, is worthless until it coverts itself into conduct. If you don’t love what you do, you won’t do it with much conviction or passion. In order to be successful, you must stick to your conviction, but be ready to abandon your assumptions. The good Lord gave you a body that can stand most anything. It’s your mind you have to convince.
  5. Successful people realize the value of time. They don’t like to waste time, because they know the true value of time. So they are able to complete their tasks in the best possible manner with the least waste of time and effort. That is why successful people are great multitaskers. Since young, they have taught themselves to perform multi tasks at one time, e.g. reading a book while waiting for their flight. They determine never to be idle. No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time who never loses any. It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing.
  6. Successful people do not like to procrastinate. They do not like to put off or avoiding doing something that must be done. They never put off till tomorrow what they can do today. They will not replace high-priority actions with tasks of low-priority. Small deeds done are better than great deeds planned.
  7. Successful people are DOERS who LOVE what they DO. That is why they are able to strive to do everything to the BEST of their abilities. They put their knowledge and what they planned to do into practice. And they will finish what they start and leave no room for regrets. They will be satisfied with nothing but their best. The dictionary is the only place where success comes before work. Your ideas never work unless you do. You accomplish in proportion to what you attempt. You can’t do anything by doing nothing. The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential – these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence. Passion can take you far. To be passionate about what you do, you got to love what you do, because people rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking.
  8. Successful people are persistent. The most essential trait found in successful people is persistence – the determination never to allow your energy or enthusiasm to be dampened by the discouragement that must inevitably come. Successful people are prepared to fail more, and they are more persistent than others. They refuse to give up or let go, and they can continue firmly in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition. What sets the successful ones apart is their amazing persistence. Through perseverance many people achieve success out of what seemed destined to be certain failure. In order to be successful, you need to be consistently persistent. Studies show that the one quality all successful people have is persistence. They are willing to spend more time accomplishing a task and to perservere in the face of many difficult odds. There is a very positive relationship between people’s ability to accomplish any task and the time they’re willing to spend on it.
  9. Successful people are determined. Determination is a trait found in the world’s most successful people. Desire is the key to motivation, but it’s determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal – a commitment to excellence – that will enable you to attain the success you seek. Determination gives you the resolve to keep going in spite of the roadblocks that lay before you. Failure will never overtake you if your determination to succeed is strong enough. Anything worth achieving will always have obstacles in the way and you’ve got to have that determination to overcome those obstacles on route to whatever it is that you want to accomplish.
  10. Successful people are consistent. They direct their lives by taking control of their consistent actions, because they know that success is the sum of small efforts, repeated daily. It is not what they do once in a while that shapes their lives, but what they do consistently. To be a consistent winner means preparing not just one day, one month or even one year – but for a lifetime. Throughout their life, they constantly adhere to sound principles and all characteristics, habits, and traits mentioned above, and constantly changing to reach perfection. The secret of success is consistency of purpose. Sir Isaac Newton once said, “I keep the subject of my inquiry constantly before me, and wait till the first dawning opens gradually, by little and little, into a full and clear light. “
  11. Successful people are diligent. They are hardworking. Because they love what they do for living, they are happy to work diligently for long hours. Plans are only good intentions unless they immediately degenerate into hard work. There is no substitute for hard work. No matter how carefully you plan your goals they will never be more than pipe dreams unless you dilligently pursue them.The reason a lot of people do not recognize opportunity is because it usually goes around wearing overalls looking like hard work. Nobody’s a natural. You work hard to get good and then work to get better. It’s hard to stay on top.
  12. Successful people are enthusiastic. Because they are enthusiastic, they always do extra to the ordinary things ordinary people do. Enthusiasm makes the difference. That is why they are extraordinary people. They are always willing to go the extra mile to do more than what they are required to do to reach their goal. Why the extra mile? Because they do all things with love.
  13. Successful people are prolific. They are highly productive and very effective because they are diligent doers who never procrastinate. That is why successful people are prolific, able to produce in large quantities or with great frequency.
  14. Successful people are decisive. They are not double minded as they have the ability to make decisions quickly and effectively. The most decisive actions of our life that are most likely to decide the whole course of our future are, more often than not, unconsidered. The direction of a man’s thought is always the decisive factor in his personality. His whole outer life will be determined by the inward inclination of his mind.
  15. Successful people are innovative. They are able to think out of the box. They are able to think differently, unconventionally or from a new perspective. They have the ability to improvise or create something out of ‘nothing.’ John D. Rockefeller  once said, ”If you want to succeed you should strike out on new paths, rather than travel the worn paths of accepted success.”
  16. Successful peeople are observant. They are very quick to notice and perceive things surrounding them. They are able to see the whole picture of a problem because they pay attention to details. It’s the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen. Men who wish to know about the world must learn about it in its particular details. Sir Isaac Newton once said, “If I have ever made any valuable discoveries, it has been owing more to patient attention, than to any other talent. “
  17. Successful people are tenacious. They are persistent in maintaining, adhering to, or seeking something valued or desired. They don’t easily get discouraged, instead, they remain focused while trying to learn something from their mistakes and then proceeds to the next opportunity to success. People of mediocre ability sometimes achieve outstanding success because they don’t know when to quit. Most men succeed because they are determined to.
  18. Successful people are resilient. They are successful because they have been able to deal with all sorts of difficulties they have faced. They are able to withstand or recover quickly from difficult conditions. They will never give up because they have never-say-die attitude.
  19. Successful people are optimistic visionaries. They have visions of the future. And they are always hopeful of their visions. Because they have hope, they are confidence about the future or successful outcome of something they planned to do. Successful people are successful because they think they can be successful. People get what they want in life when they reach the point at which they can see themselves having what they seek.
  20. Successful people love to solve problems. Being optimistic gives them the confidence they need to solve any problems. They will look at problems as opportunities to move from a given state to a desired goal state. A winner solves his/her problems, but a loser is defeated by his/hers.
  21. Successful people are great planners. They have visions and they are highly organized. They are very effective because they have the strategies to function within a formal orderly structure. That is why successful people are great at multitasking. Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible. Success depends upon previous preparation, and without such preparation there is sure to be failure. That is why successful people try to learn from the past so that they could make a better plan for the future, but they plan for the future by focusing exclusively on the present. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Plan your work for today and every day, then work your plan.
  22. Successful people are able to prioritize. Their prioritizing skills will allow them to focus on what is important first. The key to success is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities. Do things in the proper order; do not skip things that you should do first. The most important thing should be thought about or done before any other. To really effect positive change in your lives, you need to reorganise the way you spend your time that is based on the concept of importance – not urgency.
  23. Successful people are courageous. They are not afraid of failures nor are they afraid of being ridiculed by others for doing something extraordinary (e.g. trying to create a flying machine when everyone was using horse-drawn vehicle for traveling). In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.
  24. Successful people are humble. They are not afraid to learn from others or correct their mistakes. They do not underestimate the capability of others. Without a humble but reasonable confidence in your own capability you cannot be successful. Do you wish to rise? Begin by descending. You plan a tower that will pierce the clouds? Lay first the foundation of humility. All external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure – these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.
  25. Successful people are open to criticisms. Because they are humble, they are open to criticisms. When criticized, they don’t easily get offended. They respect and value the opinions of others. They love to hear criticisms and feedback so that they could improve on their shortcomings.
  26. Successful people do not gamble but they take calculated risks. They do not get rich by buying lottery or lotto but by taking risk that has been given thoughtful consideration and for which the potential costs and potential benefits have been weighted and considered. If you don’t take a chance, you don’t stand a chance.
  27. Successful people learn from failures. Why are successful people so much more effective at learning from their mistakes? They do not ignore the mistake by brushing it aside for the sake of their self-confidence. They investigate the error, seeking to learn from the mistake. They wanted to understand their mistakes, to learn from their errors, to figure out how to do better. They are very quick to learn and correct their mistakes so that they will never repeat the same mistake again. Successful people learn quite as much from their failures as from their successes. When it is obvious that their goals cannot be reached, they don’t adjust their goals, they adjust their action steps. Your attitude makes all the difference – whether you are a success or a failure, a winner or a loser, your attitude matters a lot. Because nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal, nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong attitude. The majority of failures in life are simply the victims of their mental defeats. To be successful, you should not be afraid of failure, because it’s how you deal with failure that determines how you achieve success. Success does not consist in never making failures, but in never making the same failure a second time. It is a mistake to suppose that successful people succeed through success; they much oftener succeed through failures. Precept, study, advice, and example could never have taught them so well as failure has done. The successful man will profit from his failures and try again in a different way till he succeed. Successful people makes the difficulty to be overcome their first interest; success only comes later.

We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort. The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether you win or lose, you have applied the best of yourself to the task at hand. Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other. The difference between a successful person and a loser is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack in will to succeed. The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential – these are the keys that will unlock the door to success. Success is a continuous journey. To be successful, read this success quotes daily, and put them into practise, because practice makes perfect. You get good at what you practice.

Sow a thought, and you reap an act;

Sow an act, and you reap a habit;

Sow a habit, and you reap a character;

Sow a character, and you reap a destiny.

(Charles Reade)

I never did anything by accident, nor did any of my inventions come by accident; they came by work.
(Thomas A. Edison)

“If you wish success in life, make perseverance your bosom friend, experience your wise counselor, caution your elder brother and hope your guardian genius.”

(Joseph Addison, an English essayist, poet, playwright and politician)
